Top Tips for Shopping for Dresses Online

How many times has this happened to you? You have seen a darling outfit online that looks to be perfect for that upcoming social engagement. Without hesitation, you pop in your credit card details into the site and eagerly await the courier.

Unfortunately, when the outfit finally arrives it doesn’t look anything like the website picture or worse it doesn’t fit properly. We’ve all been there. In fact, it’s estimated that 30% of all online purchases are returned to the retailer. That’s a staggeringly high percentage especially when you compare it to the 8.89% return rate of bricks and mortar stores.
We love online shopping for its speed and convenience but if 30% of what we buy needs to be packed back up and sent back to the retailer, the speed and convenience of online shopping is completely undermined.
With the above in mind, we want to share a few tips on how to shop for dresses online.

Check the Measurements

Make sure you select the appropriate measurements before completing the purchase. This may seem obvious, but clothing items that don’t fit is one of the biggest reasons for item returns.
Where possible, note the size of the model in the photo. A 6ft model may wear a dress that falls by her knees, but if you're petite this same dress may fall around your ankles. Another convenient tip is to note if the model is wearing flats or heels. This will help you gauge the dress's length.

Take advantage of all On-Site Media

Even the most disciplined of us have been caught up in a sale and made an impulse purchase without doing our research. Impulse buying online is never a good idea and we highly encourage you to check all media on a site before making a purchase. Make sure to fully read the product description information. Look at all the available dress photos, and watch any available videos of a model wearing the dress. Taking a few extra minutes to look at all the available product media will help you make a more informed decision, and hopefully, save you the frustration of having to return a dress.

Go for Classics

When buying a dress online it’s always best to go for timeless fashion pieces rather than chasing trends. You want wardrobe staples that won’t date easily. Think jackets, minimal coats, knitwear, tailored trousers and silk shirts. These pieces can be combined into a variety of outfits.
Seeking out classic cuts is also true when purchasing formal dresses online. Shapes and styles that are similar to what’s already in your wardrobe will likely suit your body type, making it less likely that you’ll want to return the items.
